ABTA Unveils Guides on EU New Entry/Exit System and ETIAS Systems for Global Travelers

ABTA has released new guidance for members and travelers about the upcoming EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), offering resources to aid in understanding and preparing for these changes.
The EES, set to launch in autumn 2024, will eliminate the need for physical passport stamps upon entering EU/Schengen areas, transitioning to an electronic system. Meanwhile, ETIAS, the new EU travel authorization required prior to travel, is expected to start in mid-2025.
Given the significance of these updates for the UK’s favorite travel destinations, ABTA emphasizes the importance for its members to be well-informed about the developments and their implications for travelers. A dedicated hub focusing on EES and ETIAS has been established in the ABTA Member Zone to support this.
This hub offers exclusive resources, including a Q&A document addressing queries raised by members about the new systems. ABTA plans to keep this hub updated with essential information as it becomes available.
The early release of this consumer advice aims to provide a reference point for members to direct their customers’ inquiries regarding the new systems. As the implementation dates approach, ABTA will also promote this resource directly to consumers, highlighting its role as a trusted source for clear and reliable travel information.
Graeme Buck, Director of Communications at ABTA – The Travel Association said:
“EES and ETIAS are two big changes coming down the line which members and travellers will need to adapt to.
“While many details are still not yet available about the new systems, we’re keen to share what we know so far with members to help them consider about what they may mean for their businesses and their customers.
“ABTA is working closely with the EU departments responsible for implementing these changes – who recognise us as a crucial partner in getting important information to the UK travel trade and consumers. We’re also speaking to relevant UK Government departments about the changes.”
