Leadership Charter

Aviation leaders endorse IATA’s Safety Leadership Charter, strengthening safety culture and supporting a zero-fatality record among member airlines in 2023.

Dubai – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has declared that 73 airline CEOs have now endorsed the IATA Safety Leadership Charter. This commitment further strengthens the robust safety culture within aviation, which led to unprecedented outcomes in 2023. Notably, there were zero fatalities recorded among IATA member airlines and those listed on the IATA Operational Safety Audit Registry.

“Strong leadership and strong safety culture are interdependent. And both are needed to drive continuous improvements in safety performance. By putting their names to the IATA Safety Leadership Charter, 73 airline CEOs have set an example for their airlines and for the industry. In doing so, the Charter is a call to action that keeps in focus the critical obligation of airline CEOs to lead a safety culture that keeps their passengers and staff safe,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

The IATA Safety Leadership Charter was crafted through collaborative efforts with IATA members and the broader aviation community. Its purpose is to assist corporate leaders in cultivating a robust safety culture within their organizations, guided by eight key leadership principles:

  • Actively promoting safety through both actions and rhetoric.
  • Enhancing safety consciousness among employees, including leadership and board members.
  • Integrating safety considerations into business strategies, processes, and performance metrics.
  • Building internal capabilities to proactively manage safety and collectively reach safety objectives.
  • Fostering a trusting environment where every employee feels accountable for safety and is encouraged to share safety-related information.
  • Developing a workplace where clear expectations for acceptable and unacceptable behaviors are both communicated and understood.
  • Ensuring all staff members assume responsibility for safety.
  • Continuously evaluating and enhancing the organization’s safety culture.

IATA’s commitment to elevating safety standards in the industry is embodied in a three-pillar strategy:

  • Safety Leadership: Emphasizing leadership and fostering a culture of safety.
  • Safety Risk: Identifying and mitigating safety risks through systematic data collection and analysis from audits, accident reports, and other sources.
  • Safety Connect: Facilitating connections among safety leaders to report, discuss, and address safety issues effectively.
