Booking.com’s ‘Gen.Voyage!’ Examines Growth of Intergenerational Travel Trends in India!

Booking.com has unveiled its latest research study, ‘Gen.Voyage!’, highlighting the growing trend of intergenerational travel in India. The research, conducted across 11 markets and territories, including India, surveyed over 8,000 travelers and offers valuable insights into how Indian families, from grandparents to grandchildren, are planning vacations together. With 57% of Indian travelers planning intergenerational trips in the next year, the study reveals a unique cultural emphasis on extended family bonds and shared travel experiences.
Intergenerational travel, where multiple generations of a family travel together, is especially prevalent in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, where multigenerational households are 43% more common than the global average. According to the study, 51% of Indian travelers value the bonding and memory-making opportunities these trips provide, while 43% see it as a chance to reconnect with family members they rarely meet. Another 44% feel that traveling together allows for learning from different generational perspectives, creating long-lasting personal growth.
The study also revealed that Millennials and Gen Z members often take the lead in planning these family trips, while Baby Boomers tend to step back from the planning process. Millennials, in particular, drive 48% of family travel arrangements, often utilizing their tech-savvy skills, while Gen Z contributes to 47% of co-planning and customizing itineraries. Despite the joy of traveling together, many families face challenges in balancing differing interests and preferences, with 31% struggling to find activities that please everyone.
Indian families are also drawn to specific types of vacations, with beach getaways (20%), rural experiences (21%), food-centered trips (25%), and spiritual journeys (21%) ranking high. Additionally, 32% of Indian families are motivated to travel for reunions or special occasions, seeing these as opportunities to strengthen family ties.
Santosh Kumar, Country Manager for India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia at Booking.com, commented, “Intergenerational travel offers a unique opportunity for Indian families to create lasting memories and celebrate their deep-rooted family bonds. Booking.com is committed to supporting Indian travelers in making the most of their family adventures by offering tailored solutions that address the diverse needs of each generation.”
This study highlights the increasing importance of intergenerational travel and how family dynamics influence the way vacations are planned and experienced in India.
