Bridging the Action-Awareness Gap Insights from Trip.com Group’s 2024 Sustainable Travel Consumer Report : Here’s What You Need to Know!

Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, has released its 2024 Sustainable Travel Consumer Report. The findings highlight a significant gap between sustainability awareness and action among travelers, despite growing interest in sustainable travel.
Drawing from nearly 10,000 survey responses across 109 countries, the report provides insights into travel trends from various regions, including Asia-Pacific (APAC), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), North America (NORAM), and Latin America (LATAM). It also delves into Gen Z’s evolving preferences and regional differences in sustainability motivations.
Awareness vs. Action
Although 92% of travelers express an interest in sustainable travel, only 56.9% have taken steps to practice it. Many cite confusion over what sustainable travel entails, while others question the authenticity of eco-friendly products. These factors highlight the need for clearer communication and education from travel providers.
Cost is also a key barrier, with travelers split on whether they’re willing to pay more for sustainable options. While some are open to paying a premium, 38.8% are unwilling to spend extra, and only 4.7% would pay 10-20% more. The willingness to pay varies by region, with APAC travelers more inclined to pay a premium, while NORAM and EMEA travelers tend to be more price-sensitive.
Demand for Sustainable Travel Information
Though not all travelers actively practice sustainability, over half (54.7%) now routinely seek sustainable options when booking online. Many expect online travel agencies (OTAs) to clearly label these options, with 75.83% of respondents saying they look for transparent information on sustainability when making decisions. This reflects the growing consumer demand for accessible, sustainability-related information.
Regional Motivations for Sustainable Travel
Motivations for sustainable travel differ across regions. Environmental and cultural concerns lead globally, with 47.3% of travelers prioritizing environmental protection. However, APAC and LATAM travelers tend to focus more on environmental factors, while EMEA and NORAM travelers adopt a broader perspective, including wildlife protection, cultural heritage, and economic impact.
Engaging Gen Z in Sustainable Travel
Gen Z’s attitudes toward sustainable travel reveal a gap in understanding and motivation. Despite their exposure to sustainability issues, many are hesitant to pay extra for eco-friendly options. Some key findings about Gen Z include:
- 73.0% consider buying from OTAs with sustainable offerings.
- 53.6% say environmental concerns motivate them.
- 48.3% remain unsure about what qualifies as a sustainable trip.
Travel providers have a key opportunity to engage Gen Z by providing clearer labeling and incentives to encourage sustainable choices.
