The Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel has released a critical new report warning that America’s air travel system is unprepared for the historic surge in tourism expected from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and other major global events.

Without immediate action, airport delays, visa backlogs, and overwhelmed security checkpoints could hinder the nation’s ability to capitalize on a $100 billion economic opportunity.

The U.S. Travel Association, a key advocate for travel industry growth, is calling on President Trump and Congress to implement urgent reforms to ensure a seamless and secure travel experience for visitors and residents alike.

“These advancements present a rare opportunity for Washington to deliver the most significant travel improvements since TSA PreCheck,” said Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association.

“By acting now, we can enhance security, streamline air travel, and strengthen America’s standing as a premier global destination.”

Key Travel Reform Priorities

To prevent massive TSA bottlenecks, visa processing delays, and outdated security procedures, the report outlines four key travel reforms that the White House and Congress must enact immediately:

Establish White House Leadership for Global Events

Form a federal task force, chaired by a senior White House official, to coordinate travel and security policies across government agencies ahead of mega-events.

Improve Visa Processing & Expand Secure Travel Agreements

Deliver on President Trump’s pledge for efficient visa processing before the 2026 World Cup.

Provide full-strength U.S. consular staffing to prevent visa backlogs.

Extend B-1/B-2 visa validity for vetted travelers by two years.

Launch a National Vetting Service to process all visitor visas in 30 days or less.

Expand partnerships with trusted foreign governments to strengthen global travel security.

Invest in the World’s Most Advanced Airport Security

End the Passenger Security Fee diversion and increase TSA technology funding.

Implement new security measures allowing travelers to keep electronics, IDs, shoes, and liquids in carry-ons within five years.

Strengthen Border Security & Reduce Wait Times

Deploy full-strength U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) staffing at all major airports.

Use biometric screening to eliminate unnecessary CBP officer interactions for U.S. citizens returning home.

Complete biometric air exit tracking within two years to prevent immigration overstays.

Bipartisan Support for a Historic Travel Overhaul

The Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel, composed of former officials from Homeland Security, CBP, TSA, and private sector experts, emphasizes that this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for travel reform.

“America has the chance to lead the world with a state-of-the-art travel system,” said Kevin McAleenan, former Acting Secretary of Homeland Security.

“By integrating smart technology and process improvements, we can enhance national security while welcoming millions of global visitors.”
